During his time in the Air Force as a WWII Lancaster tail gunner, Barwang founder Peter Robertson learnt about the beauty of wine from his fellow pilots. After the war when Robertson returned to Australia, he became a sheep and wheat farmer, settling on a farm near Young, in New South Wales. The farm continued in this mode until 1968 when a terrible drought forced Robertson to diversify. He planted grapevines on a 12 hectare corner of his Barwang property, which is now recognised as the first vineyard in the Hilltops wine region.
Since 1969, Barwang has delivered wines with such an elegant profile that it launched the exploration of further regions in the area to produce wines that live up to the Barwang name – complex, fruit driven and food friendly.

HILLTOPSThe Hilltops wine region can be found hugging the slopes of the Great Dividing Range in NSW, anchored around the towns of Young and Harden. A stunning landscape of classic Australian farmland, the area is one of the most exciting wine regions of NSW, producing Shiraz and Cabernet wines of particularly high quality.
TUMBARUMBATucked away in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, Tumbarumba is one of New South Wales’ newest and most exciting wine regions. Spectacular mountainous landscapes, open green pastures and rugged Australian bushland set the scene for a remarkably unique wine region.
A finalist in the 2007 Young Winemaker of the Year for his Barwang wines, Andrew sees Tumbarumba as arguably the most exciting mainland region for Chardonnay and with vine age, the team is really tapping into Hilltops' true potential.
After studying viticulture and oneology at Adelaide University, he has completed vintages in Central Otago, Oregon and Northern Rhone Valley. Harry loves perfumed, vibrant styles of Shiraz and delicate, restrained Chardonnay.
The Barwang vineyards have been tendered by Chris for the past 12 years and he believes Barwang has the ideal terroir to produce vibrant, cool climate wines. With 24 years experience in viticulture, he is leading the way in sustainable vineyard and winery practises.
